The undiscovered Jewel of the Balkans by Trish Geekie.

We came with an open mind and stepped off the plane, at Zagreb, into wonderful hot sunshine. A big surprise, driving to our accommodation in Banja Luka, was how lushly green the countryside is. Forests galore and some amazing rivers.

Anyone wanting mountain biking, kayaking or glorious walks won’t be disappointed!

Travelling through local villages or small towns reveals a local cafe and bar culture. Alongside the road you can always find fruit and vegetable kiosks, cheap as chips, and the produce fresh and gloriously coloured. No additives or preservatives here!

We spent a lovely few hours at a bar by the river Vrbas, drinking the native beer Pivo, and watching the locals gliding down on tyres and dinghys. A few brave fathers, punted up stream which looked extremely difficult, but hey, we were just watching which was much easier!

The restaurants we visited were very welcoming and in the main, served HUGE portions.
This country is a meat eaters delight, but there was always something for those preferring fish or vegetarian.

The amount of churches and mosques give a clue to the immense history that Bosnia has.

One big surprise for me was the Saturday evening culture in Banja Luka. Everyone dressed up and enjoying coffee, cake, ice cream and so on. No lager lout culture here! That’s not to say that there aren’t clubs and bars because there are and the town definitely had a buzzing vibe.

Everyone in our party, teenagers to Grandma, had a great time -thanks Bosnia for a real eye opener!

Disclosure:

Trish Geekie is a close relative of the family who run Holiday in Bosnia.
